Just wanted to toss your way an idea for a future investigation.
That is, what qualifies as ‘canon’ and are there different types of canon?
I’d say that ‘canon’ is not black and white but rather a spectrum from hard ‘show bible’ to ‘fan fiction’ with some things falling in-between and can migrate both up and down the spectrum.
In order of the spectrum I’d say falls like this.
Highest is the text of broadcast episodes. Text here being explicit dialog and clearly ‘writer’ driven events. The different writers get a chance to compare notes while very early in the production process and the chance that events written in the text of one show can have carry over effects to other episodes is greater.
Next but slightly less canon is ‘story board artists’ silent Pantomime, many times the credited writer of the episode may not even be aware of these little nods to world building and continuity. Examples would be the some of the repeated use of Pinkies Party Cannon, Rainbow reading Daring Doo books or the photos showing Spike’s pet Peewee return to his parents. Why is this ‘less’ canon? Because since the writer would have gone on to write the next show long before the previous reached post processing, the chance of a future writer directly contradicting a ‘story board’ element is much higher. Another one that shows that story board canon can be fairly weak, is the video game played by a boy during hearts and hoof day. It’s the only time a video game was ever seen and is not likely to affect future canon.
Next are the Foley sound artists, they don’t get involved with Canon too often, as when they do add a ‘story’ point its more likely for mood than fact filled. An example of this is the flush toilet sound used in Last Roundup in Dodge Junction. . . I’ll get back to that Toilet sound in the next level.
Next is ‘word of god’ comments from writers or fans, not just Lauren Faust, but anyone still active in the show. Their hints may or may not end up explicitly in future episodes, but clearly they have a better chance of influencing canon, so their even non expressed in show thoughts carry some weight. Still sometimes they will contradict the show and the ranking of canon has to be consulted. Example of that would be when Lauren once said (paraphrased) “The Ponies don’t use bathrooms, they instead fertilize the flowers” Yet we saw an outhouse, (and heard a flush toilet) in the Last Roundup.
Next is the ‘high production’ fan fiction. Very little if any of this will due to silly Hollywood lawyers, ever bubble up to real canon, but in the spectrum of canon, some of the more well known fandom memes can influence other less well known canon and that has some role to play. There no in show canon relationship between Vinyl Scratch and Octavia but much of the fan fiction now accepts it as a given, needing no further explanation. Some of the pairing and fan canon rules are so ubiquitous that newer writers may not even be aware that the original sources are not show canon. There is even a chance (small chance) that some of the less intense of these fan-canon can bubble back into the show. Best real example of that is the term Alicorn for the Princesses race name.
Next are some of more ‘far a field’ fan fiction, things that will by their nature can never get back to the original show because clear contract, age appropriateness, or legal reasons, yet are so well established that other fan fiction writers can refer without or limited, explanation to these elements and expect most fan readers to ‘get it’ Examples are the Doctor, the male versions of the main 6, and just about all shipping.
Next are shared universe fan stories. Because they exist in a shared universe, they have to have a ‘universe’ bible and some sort of consistent canon between the different writers, like ‘End of Ponies’ or ‘Fall out equestria’ this consistency gives them a certain type of canon, but only when referring to themselves.
Below and lastly that I’d say are the ‘one shots’, which sometime can be very good fan fiction, but so tied to that writers original take on the MLP universe, that other fan writers avoid these elements because it would be confusing to even widely read fans. Some of these can carry a lot of weight and represent good quality but if another fan writer used these elements they would have to start over with a full explanation of who, what and why they are referring to each and every time. Example would be the ‘philosophical Lyra’ used in ‘background pony’ or ‘skilled killer Rarity’ from the Immortal games.
