I Facepalmed So Fucking Hard I Destroyed My Brain

http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=2913

After reading their ‘club description’ I felt like fucking strangling someone. If something like this exists, I’m about as elitist as a fucking Narutard. This is fucking disgusting.

And if that wasn’t bad enough their taste SUCKS. They accepted fucking Gankutsuou (which is a great show and all but) while rejecting fucking Utena, Gurren Lagann, ef, FLCL… UGH, IT JUST PISSES ME OFF.

  1. This would be our way of putting a stamp of approval to a select few series that truly belong to the upper echelons of their respective medium.”

Rather, that does seem pretty elitist.

  2. Everyone’s definition of true quality is different, yet if you rate true quality differently from them, you’re out? That’s the message I’m getting.

Meh. If they’re only writing reviews about things they like, that makes me wonder how high the potential for fawning is.

  3. I’ve been aware of their existence for a while now. It’s never really bothered me: ‘Expert Aesthetic Consensus’ (if you will) is an interesting approach and while I frequently disagree with their conclusions it’s not like they’re murdering small children, or anything.

I do wish that they’d write better reviews, though. I have no objection to bad writing, except when it comes from self-acclaimed critics.

  4. I’m a member, and while I find that most of their decisions aren’t stuff that I agree with, it does at least get some discussion going on. And I figure that like IKnight said, as long as they aren’t doing anything really too bad with it, than I have no problem with being in the group. :P

I haven’t tried my hand at throwing up reviews like they want the members to do, since my standards differ from theirs. :3

  5. Even if some of the members are themselves elitist, that doesn’t make the club elitist. The join requirements are ridiculously easy to meet if you are even a little critical of the shows you’ve have watched (or manga you’ve read).

Your disgust with the rejection of Gurren Lagann, EF, and FLCL is pretty ridiculous. Them being rejected does not automatically mean that the show is “Bad”, it just means that it was not able to secure enough support for it to pass. Just go and read the discussion threads for each of the series and you should find a wide array of opinions from people who absolutely adored them, people who thought they were really good (just not great or perfect), and the rare person who absolutely hated them. The nice thing is the members who post in the threads generally give a detailed description of the things they both liked and disliked about the technical aspects of the series. This gives some validity to their arguments and hopefully moves the discussions beyond baseless opinions and simple flaming/fanboy/fangirl reactions.

But by all means, continue to hate the club based on a shallow 10 minute assessment; or instead you can look past our lists and see the good analysis and arguments that have been made by the members.

  6. The idea that the club is pretentious just because it has join requirements is silly. The particular rule that you seem to have a gripe with is EXTREMELY flexible and has only been used 1 time in the history of the club to deny a person access (1 out of 500+ applications). But lets be honest here, if (for example) your rating system somehow manages to give a perfect 10 to both Buzzer Beater and Monster then there is probably something wrong with both your rating value system and your abilities of critical assessment.

  7. it seems like they’re doing an OK job getting a general consensus about what stands out among anime/manga. besides, all they’re doing is writing reviews in the end, right? that doesn’t seem pretentious at all.. and it’s not like they’re pros or anything, they’re just spreading the love of anime/manga, right? also the club is “critics and CONNOISSEURS” so i don’t think everyone in the club joined just to be critical of anime..
