If you know who I am, you know that I am the blogosphere’s resident Akiyuki Shinbo fanboy alongside Wildarmsheero. Evidently, some Japanese fan wants to let us know who’s boss with this excellent admission of epic fandom!
Akiyuki Shinbo has had a long career that shows no sign of slowing, and it is surely a career worth celebrating! This video goes in something resembling reverse chronological order of his career, though a couple of things pop up in just odd places. All of his work with SHAFT is there, such as Maria Holic, Natsu no Arashi, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Pani Poni Dash, Moon Phase, Hidamari Sketch, Negima?!, and ef (while not technically Shinbo, most people wouldn’t care to make the distinction, since it’s his style and all.)
It’s also got his old stuff, though, which is what makes a diehard Shinbo fan such as myself grin. The first Nanoha, The SoulTaker, Detatoko Princess, Devil Hunter Yohko, Hurricane Polymar, Metal Fighter Miku, and Tenamonya Voyagers are all there. Which brings me to a bit of a disappointment – there is no inclusion of Twilight of the Dark Master or Le Portrait de Petit Cossette – the later of which is one of my favorite definitive Shinbo works.
Now, it occurs to me that Cossette didn’t really have an opening or ending theme, and it may be the same for Twilight, but they still could have found some kind of way to worm them in there. Anyway, regardless, this is an awesome tribute to my alltime favorite director. Maybe people can get up the desire to watch Shinbo’s older shows from this?
Good stuff. Shinbo pretty much cemented Shaft’s reputation, in my opinion. The guy’s a real lunatic, but in a good way.
“If you know who I am, you know that I am the blogosphere’s resident Akiyuki Shinbo fanboy alongside Wildarmsheero.”
B-what? There’s more than just you two guys. Seriously.
Are they as extreme as us?
Extreme in what way? You know that I’m a fan of all things Shinbo as well, for example, or otou-san for another example. We just don’t flaunt it enough, I guess.
I mean extreme in the way of studying his style and it’s evolution and going out of your way to find his old shows or researching the possibility of him being a porn director under an alias, etc.
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and all that.
Chinbo must be batshit insane or strung out on smack when he does a show, and that’s why he’s my hero.
Lol, everyone seems to make the ‘chinbo’ typo now and then
Yes, typo.
SSSHHHIIINNNNBBBBOOOOOO-SSSAAAAANNNNNN
I like Akiyuki Shinbo as much if not more than you.
I infinitely doubt that. Especially because, according to your favorites list, you are only a huge fan of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. In which case it would be more accurate to consider yourself a an of that show, rather than Shinbo himself. Unless it’s the list being incorrect. (after all, mine is, so I’ll understand)
I’ve been meaning to go back and look at all of my anime, since my feelings toward some anime have changed over the course of time. Of course, this means that the disclaimer on my Top Ten of “current of this very second” is wrong. I might get around to changing my top ten when I add another series to it. Curse you for doing research and using facts to back your statements.
Of course, you’re favorites list is comparable to mine in that…where is the Akiyuki Shinbo?….oh wait, you already covered that.
In truth, Hidamari Sketch, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, the SoulTaker, Pani Poni Dash, Petit Cossette, and Tenamonya Voyagers could all be considered among my favorites.
I watched Devil Hunter Yohko and it wasn’t anything like his recent work!
Also, Shinbo could very well just be an Anno copycat with his own twists in execution!
