There are no characters that I find more attractive than the cast of Lucky Star. Period. I can’t totally put my finger on what I love so much about them – it’s between the petite feeling and the thin deftness of the lines, which create a body that I simply cannot deny. I mentioned above my theory that a truly attractive character is one who would look great wearing nothing at all, and the Lucky Star girls are my prime example of the case, but that’s not to say that the clothes the wear aren’t a big part of my love. Besides the school uniforms that are excellent in their simplicity, the cast of Lucky Star has been seen in all manner of other outfits, and every last one of them is to fucking die for.
Kagami has the best fashion sense of them all, often showing up in spectacularly put-together combinations, but my absolute favorite is when the girls wear super-cute overalls. I’m pretty sure that Kagami, Tsukasa, and Konata all wear them at some point, or at least have official art where they are wearing them. Overalls are probably the last thing you’d ordinarily associate with ‘cute’, and yet these girls pull it off exceedingly well. I could seriously geek out about every outfit in this show and the way that they are well thought-out to go along with the seasonal weather that the characters would be dealing with at the time.
Lucky Star only dodges the ‘template’ bullet by a bit, but it’s those small details that matter in a series like this. Mostly, the differences in the faces come from eye design, hairstyle/color, and, occasionally, mouths (Konata’s :3 or Misao’s fang.) Those subtleties, however, are enough to make the cast not look like carbon copies, which is more than can be said about much of it’s ilk. Most importantly, every character looks nice, including the very sparse males (Konata’s awesome dad, and Shiraishi “THE MAN” Minoru). My favorite pair of designs are Konata and Kagamin, and I won’t deny that I might be biased because of yuri.
There is no such thing as a ‘lame-looking Soul Eater character.’ Hero, villain, random support character – everyone looks cool in Soul Eater. Mangaka Ohkubo Atsushi practically has a fetish for creative design, and the anime adaption of his work by Studio Bones perfectly captures the feel of his characters and has a full grasp of Ohkubo’s desire to keep the look of his series fresh. Every character is completely distinct in appearance, connected by the theme of urban wear and personal style. Most of the heroes in Soul Eater are actually obsessed with their own appearance, and their designs and fashion sense is tied directly to their personality as well as story trends. Costume changes are aplenty, but the urban style is never inconsistent.
What’s more, the designs lend themselves to expressions that never, ever fail to look ‘cool’ (as Soul himself always claims is his true goal in life.) If a character is pissed off or ready for action, then the viewer finds themselves pumped up just from seeing how badass the character looks doing it. When, say, Maka is meant to look cute, she might be given a dress to wear, but it won’t just be any dress, it will be a lavishly articulated black dress donning a complimentary white rose that immediately catches attention, and her face will be drawn with a simplicity and placidity to it that just turns you into goo.
I almost can’t be asked to choose a favorite design from Soul Eater. I feel like I could go on for days about what makes each one of them special, but since this is already a post of immense length, I’ll save that for some other time. The one design that truly stands above the rest is black-room Soul. When taken into the black room in his mind, Soul wears an incredibly snazzy tuxedo striped with red vertical lines that, to put it simply, is what I would wear at all times every single day if I owned such a thing. Soul looks downright handsome wearing it, and it perfectly completes the atmosphere of the trippy dark room.
Renkin San-Kyuu Magical Pokaan, Hayate no Gotoku, Samurai Champloo, Kara no Kyoukai and Canaan, Infinite Ryvius and s-CRY-ed, Gunsmith Cats + Otaku no Video and Bubblegum Crisis, To Aru Kagaku no Index/Railgun, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Sky Girls + Kimikiss ~Pure Rouge~ + Nabari no Ou, and Loveless, Anyamaru Tantei Kiruminzoo – I was gong to say something about each of these, but I am totally done with this post lol.
And that about does it~! So, what are your favorite shows for character designs? Remember, it has to be shows where you really dig the whole cast!
By the way, there’s this thing going on called the Aniblog Tourney. Today, my blog begins it’s run against Omonomono. It would suck to lose to omo, so I’d be very appreciative if you could pop over there and give me a vote!
