The Oonuma Shin Brand of OP/ED

Warnings for this post: there’ll be a lot of youtube embeds, and to get the point of the post, you’ll have to watch most of them. This post features some presumptuousness on my part; I’m going to say things like “this is Oonuma’s doing” or “this is Shinbo’s doing” or “you can see Shinbo’s influence on Oonuma here”—obviously, I can’t prove any of this to be true, as I’ve never met Shinbo nor Oonuma. This information is what I personally believe to be true, but you should formulate your own opinions based on the evidence.

I have a distinct mental image of Oonuma Shin and Shinbo Akiyuki as directors, and of SHAFT as a studio. Each has a definitive and irreversible influence on the others, and tracing whose original ideas are whose could very well be impossible. However, I have a lot of fun imagining all the guys at SHAFT as they come up with ideas to put into each new show. I also have a helpful device that makes this post possible—Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, the first show that Oonuma directed away from Studio SHAFT. I already know what Shinbo is like away from the studio, so now I feel I have a pretty good sense of what each of the three parties contributes to the work they’re involved in.

Holy Shit, I Knew Bakemonogatari Sold Really Well But…

These SHAFT show DVD/BD rankings are ridiculous! You always hear about how well Bakemonogatari sold, but it’s hard to get a real perspective on it until you see something like this. Another source provides the following data.
MOON PHASE-  (Tsukuyomi -Moon Phase-)
(Negima!?)
(Hidamari Sketch)
(2007年) *4,165 ef – a tale of memories.(BDBOX含まず)
(Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)
(2008年) *1,405 ef – a tale of melodies.(同発BD含まず)
(Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei S2)
365 (Hidamari Sketch x365)
(Maria Holic)
(Natsu no Arashi)
(Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei S3)
(Bakemonogatari (just the first 5))
(Natsu no Arashi S2)
(Hidamari Sketch Hoshimitsu)
(Dance in the Vampire Bund)
(Arakawa Under the Bridge)

Staggering! I think it’s interesting how the second and third seasons of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei didn’t sell as well as the first, though the above chart leads me to believe that the OVA sales are what prompted further seasons to be made. I wonder why it is that the Natsu no Arashi sales seem to have been incorrectly marked, since there is no way it only sold 247 copies, especially with them making a second season and all, haha. I also think it’s interesting that ef melodies and Maria Holic sold poorly because I thought those shows sucked, so it looks like the consensus was pretty widely reached, hehe. Will be interested to see if Hidamari Sketch s3 continues what appears to be an incline in DVD sales over each season~

Scryed and PaniPoni Dash After Several Years – No Internet? FUZAKENNA!!!!!!

I lost internet on Friday thanks to freak router accident. To give you an idea of how devastating it was, this was when my mom had just got a new computer, my younger brother’s laptop had just come back from over a month of repairs, and we all had just gotten on Spring Break. Plus I was finally following the current season. This is pretty normal for our family – we have extraordinarily back luck in these situations. I’ve been leaching weak-ass local connections in the meantime, occasionally getting little bursts of internet, like now, but I get my real internet back anywhere between this afternoon and Thursday. I would have waited and done a longer post, but I’m in a marathoning duplex and wanted to get some things off of my chest. I’ll be brief.
